Adopt data protection practices in your organisation to foster a culture of data governance amongst employees

GDPR

GDPR and Industry

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires organisations to safeguard personal data and uphold the privacy rights of anyone in EU territory.

The GDPR has impacted the functions of organisations across Europe, many of which seem to lack awareness of the GDPR’s impact on their organisation and are lagging behind in taking necessary actions to adopt the new measures.

What are the challenges faced by industry?

Since the GDPR came into force in May 2018, organisations of all sizes have been grappling with the regulation. While many companies are aware of the existence of the GDPR, this does not automatically translate into an understanding of its requirements.

Research has suggested that many organisations still require additional guidance on organisational and technical measures to assist them with GDPR compliance, and best practices for instituting specific data protection processes and issues – such as data protection by design and by default, the grounds for processing personal data, data protection impact assessments and how to conduct a risk assessment.

Facilitating industry compliance

At Trilateral Research, we develop resources that help both private and public sector clients achieve compliance with the GDPR.

We enable industry to better understand and implement compliance measures through the development of training and awareness-raising initiatives, and contributing to EU reports that advise on best practices for compliance with the latest data protection regulations.

How to do it right

The Trilateral Research Data Protection and Cyberrisk team have extensive experience working with clients to better understand the GDPR, and implement appropriate compliance processes to ensure alignment with the latest regulations.

In reality, it is still early days in terms of understanding the evolving implications of the GDPR regulatory environment. All organisations have work to do, none can claim full compliance as decisions in this space are still emerging. More timely and ready access to advice is undoubtedly needed, be that through voluntary audits, workshops, networks, bespoke query answering services or whatever creative solutions can be developed.
