Trilateral Research are delighted to announce the SHERPA, SIENNA and PANELFIT projects’ final event which will take place on 23 March 2021. We invite you to join our online event where we will discuss the ethical, social and legal impact of emerging technologies and put forward our proposals for the ethical governance of these technologies.
The three EU projects represent a €10m investment in research from the European Commission to develop governance structures that are sensitive to ethical and human rights concerns of emerging technologies, notably including artificial intelligence (AI) and big data.
This event, organized and hosted in collaboration with European Parliament’s Science and Technology Options Assessment panel (STOA), builds on the work undertaken in the three projects and is meant to stimulate high-level policy-related debate around questions concerning new and emerging disruptive technologies. It takes its point of departure from the current discussion and legislative agenda of AI and asks:
- which issues and challenges of AI are in need of particular attention
- how can these challenges be addressed
- how can we build on what was learned during the AI discourse to prepare for the next wave of scientific and technological advances
The common goal is to ensure that technology advancement has a beneficial impact on society and that related risks are addressed early.
The event will be moderated by Science journalist and broadcaster Vivienne Parry and will include keynote speeches from the EC’s Despina Spanou and Mariya Gabriel, as well as the University of Montreal’s renowned AI expert Yoshua Bengio. See the full list of speakers here.

Our research
Trilateral Research’s interdisciplinary team, made of experts in the fields of computer and social sciences as well as ethics and law, explore the impact of new technologies at different scales and in particular domains of innovation, such as artificial intelligence, smart information systems and robotics.
As part of the SHERPA project, Trilateral has developed a set of policy recommendations that promote the ethical development of new technologies, focusing on strengthening of human rights, reduction of ethical tensions, enhancement of responsible research innovation, ease of use, the likelihood of adoption, and value for money.
In SIENNA, we assessed the legal and human rights requirements of AI and robotics’ development and investigated the societal acceptance and awareness of these technologies, outlining the ethical code of responsible conduct for researchers in AI and robotics.
