Trilateral Research interviewed data protection authorities across Europe to understand how they conducted technology foresight – the ways they try to understand and anticipate the impacts of new technologies on privacy and data protection. Based upon our findings, the paper advocated for a collective European data protection technology foresight task force as the insights could be easily shared between the different authorities. Since the paper’s publication, the idea of technology foresight has gained increased traction amongst DPAs, the European Data Protection Supervisor has established a techmonitor function and made foresight a key theme of a recent EDPS conference.
