We helped data protection authorities to reflect on how GDPR would change how they cooperate with each other

Abstract

The EU’s general data protection regulation (GDPR) made big changes to the rules around the processing of personal data in the EU, but also had a big impact around the world. In the run up to the GDPR coming into force, we interviewed representatives from data protection regulators around the EU to understand their perspective on the coming reform, and in particular how they anticipated that it might affect their cooperation with each other, and how they would handle data protection issues that crossed national borders. By collecting and summarising these viewpoints, and sharing them back with the community of EU data protection authorities, we could highlight areas of agreement and disagreement, and highlight issues that the community would have to manage. The subsequent years have seen increasing cooperation and collaboration between EU DPAs.
