We are delighted to announce that David Wright will be giving a lecture on Ethics in the digital society on 28 November 2019.
The lecture will take place in Paris at the Omid & Gisel Kordestani Rooftop Conference Center and has been sponsored by the Civic Media Lab.
The Civic Media Lab is an informal hub at the American University of Paris where people of diverse backgrounds, ideas and theories collide and crisscross in productive ways. It provides multiple disciplinary and technological pathways for designing solutions to problems and is a platform for innovative and productive student-faculty collaborations.
In his lecture, David Wright will first identify the various actors who have turned the Internet into a danger zone, including state-sponsored attackers, governments and companies engaged in social surveillance, oligarchs manipulating public opinion, organized crime, terrorists, trolls and others. He outlines the differences between conventional war and cyberwar. He gives examples of technologies that amplify the danger zone, including deepfake technologies and facial recognition. Second, he will consider various countermeasure strategies for addressing attackers. Third, he will discuss whether ethics can deter some of the attackers on the Internet and how ethics might influence our countermeasures strategies.
David Wright is Director of Trilateral Research, a London-based research company, which he founded in 2004. He has been a partner in more than 50 projects funded by the European Union involving privacy, surveillance, risk, security and ethics.
Among other projects, he is currently working on the SHERPA project, which analyses how AI and big data analytics impact ethics and human rights. Within this context, Trilateral Research has developed five scenarios introducing the technologies and applications that may be available in 2025, how these may be used, their ethical, legal, social and economic impacts, and the recommendations to reach a desired future and avoid an undesired one.
