Trilateral Research joins eleven partners from across the EU in the recently launched three-year Horizon 2020 project TRUST aWARE to develop tools and intelligence to help internet users combat security and privacy threats.

Cyberattacks targeting individuals are increasing. Internet users are not always aware of the security and privacy threats facing them. These attacks have grown in scale and sophistication. As a consequence, the traditional tools to protect people, such as anti-virus software, often fail to provide adequate protection. TRUST aWARE will develop tools for individual users and insights for key stakeholders, such as data protection agencies and developers, to protect the privacy and security of individuals.

Tools and insights for more secure software

TRUST aWARE will improve security and privacy by empowering key stakeholders against security and privacy threats. On the one hand, the project will develop user-friendly tools for people to alert them about security and privacy risks. On the other, computer emergency response teams (CERTs) and data protection agencies will obtain new tools for collaboration and intelligence for audit purposes . Finally, ‘security and privacy’-by-design certification tools will help developers build digital tools compliant with EU regulations around security and privacy.

To maximise the positive impact of the tools, the fundamental social, ethical and legal values underpinning the solutions and frameworks developed by the TRUST aWARE project are critically examined. Trilateral Research will develop an ethics and data protection protocol for the partners to address potential issues. An ethical and socio-economic impact assessment will aid responsible innovation. Trilateral will also lead the creation of a dashboard for individual users and organisations to inform them about the security and privacy risks associated with their digital activities.

Meet the team

The TRUST aWARE – ‘Enhancing Digital Security, Privacy and TRUST in softWARE’ project was formally launched at a virtual kick-off meeting in summer 2021, which was attended by representatives from partner organisations, including research centres, academia and industry from across Europe.

The project is coordinated by Javier Gutiérrez Meana from Tree Technology SA (TREE) – one of the leading R&D-performing company in the field of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence from Spain. Other consortium members include Fundación Cibervoluntarios (CIB) from Spain, Asociatia InfoCons (ICNS) from Romania, E-Seniors: Initiation des Seniors aux NTIC Association (ESE) from France, Fondazione Mondo Digitale (FMD) from Italy, F-Secure OYJ (FSC) from Finland, Fundación IMDEA Networks (IMDEA) from Spain, University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) from Spain, Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) from France, ABI Lab – Di Ricerca E Innovazione Per La Bance (CERTF) from Italy, and IOT Lab (IOTL) from Switzerland.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under grant agreement No 101021377.
