Gender equality is a fundamental value and an essential part of European research and innovation policy. At Trilateral we feel privileged to be part of the newly launched Horizon 2020 GEARING-Roles project, in which we will be working closely with our partners to promote more effective gender equality and eradicate discrimination in research institutions.

Devising and implementing Gender Equality Plans in higher education institutions or research centres, GEARING-Roles favours real and effective equality between women and men.

Partners will work in the plans’ implementation taking into account different factors, such as suitability of the agents involved in the setting-up of the plans, the strategic alliances built, and the awareness raised on the potential resistances that are to be faced in their implementation and that prevent real structural changes in these organisations.

GEARING-Roles will implement six new tailored Gender Equality Plans (GEPs) in 5 European Universities and work towards sustainable changes in institutional mechanisms, policies, practices and procedures that foster gender equality alongside aiming at the construction of gender roles in professional settings, and on the gendered career choices.

“Every Gender Equality Plan should be understood as a process that is born out of the will to grow and become stronger so that equality between women and men can be promoted and legitimised”, said Dr José María Gibert, Rector Magnificus of the University of Deusto and project coordinator.

About GEARING-Roles

GEARING-Roles brings together a pan-European group of academics and industry professionals from eight countries (Spain, Portugal, Estonia, Slovenia, Turkey, United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands) to collaborate and exchange knowledge, good practices, and lessons learned on designing, implementing, and evaluating 6 Gender Equality Plans (GEPs). The project, therefore, has a firm objective of challenging and transforming gender roles and identities linked to professional careers and working towards real institutional change. This multidisciplinary, multinational, and multi-sectoral collaboration will be supported by training and mentoring activities, awareness raising campaigns as well as bi-annual videos and podcasts, and annual networking events.

Trilateral coordinates the project’s wide communication, dissemination and outreach activities to ensure project awareness, knowledge sharing and the uptake of GEARING tools and results. Trilateral will also optimise the reach and visibility of the project by disseminating practical information and guidelines on methods and instruments for institutional change on gender equality within and beyond the GEARING- Roles network.

The project is coordinated by the University of Deusto in Spain and brings together industry/SMEs, academia and research institutions including one research council.

The GEARING-Roles kick-off meeting took place in Bilbao, Spain, on 17th and 18th January  2019. During the two-day event, the partners presented the project to external stakeholders from Spain (including private consultants, public organizations, among others), met and discussed the project with the European Commission Project Officer, shared information about their organisations, and discussed the GEARING-Roles work plan over the next four years.
