Working together to build more resilient societies mitigating the risks related to earthquakes

Trilateral Research is looking for partners to write a proposal for an upcoming EU funded project to work towards operational forecasting of earthquakes and early warning capacity for more resilient societies.

This call is within the Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials Work Programme. The purpose of the call is to help mitigate the risks related to earthquakes and provide citizens additional protection that goes beyond building codes and retrofitting actions.
The aim is to enable effective, real-time seismic risk reduction capacity by improving current observational and modelling capabilities and innovating new forecasting and testing-validation capabilities that account for the complex uncertainties of earthquake risk.
As recently reminded by an editorial in Science, new cultures of risk reduction can start with earthquake early warning (EEW) systems: “Earthquake early warning systems, even imperfect ones, can help people prepare for earthquakes and build local seismic culture, both beneficial in reducing earthquake-related losses.”

The main priorities of the project are:

  • Design a new generation earthquake sensing and early warning modelling system
  • Develop a decision support system that works with standardised procedures
  • Bring into conversation different mapping methods, from geological maps to citizen science maps
  • Improve conceptions of preparedness and resilience to better measure the effectiveness of the tools
  • Develop methodologies for initiating and maintaining dialogue between scientists, practitioners, and citizens
  • Provide recommendations for plans and policies

Trilateral brings expertise in the social, ethical, and economic aspects of resilience, preparedness, and risk reduction, as well as crisis communication.

We bring the necessary skills and insights to make sure that the value of an earthquake early warning system, and its alerts, are effective, making sure that measurable action can be taken to reduce harm by pairing the innovations in sensors, decision support systems, and risk modelling, with disaster preparedness research, education, planning, and policy.

We regularly work across disciplines and lead proposals for EC projects and thus are an ideal partner to ensure both the integration of the various work packages and taking a primary role in writing and assembling the proposal.

The first stage proposal is due 27 February 2018
