Ben Howkins

Research Analyst

Role at Trilateral

Ben works on the TechEthos project, supporting the analysis of reports on international and EU law relating to climate engineering, Extended Digital Reality (XR), and neuro technologies.

Prior to joining Trilateral, Ben worked as an intern and student volunteer at the pro bono University of Exeter Community Law Clinic, providing administrative and case working support to the Environmental and Exceptional Case Funding (ECF) teams.

Ben holds an LLB from the London School of Economics and Political Science and an LLM from the University of Exeter, where he completed modules from both the LLM and Socio-Legal MRes programmes focusing on the protection of human rights in the EU, specifically human dignity, the intersection between law and new and emerging technologies, including AI, as well as approaches to research in law.

For his LLM dissertation, Ben analysed the putative legal personhood of nonhuman entities, specifically nonhuman animals, the environment, and Artificially Intelligent Robots (AIRs), using a theoretical-doctrinal methodological approach.
